Tilt or touch? Settling the mobile racing debate
Every mobile racing fan has an opinion on this, usually a loud one. So while reviewing Neon Drift Rally I did the tedious thing and ran the same circuit dozens of times with each control scheme, trying to be honest about which felt better.
Tilt steering, when it's implemented well, is genuinely more immersive. Leaning your phone into a corner connects you to the car in a way buttons can't. The catch is that it's terrible on a bumpy train and useless if you're lying down, which is when I play most of my mobile games.
Touch controls are more consistent. On-screen steering and a brake button don't care how you're sitting, and for drift-heavy games the precise timing matters more than immersion. I posted my fastest times with touch, though tilt was more fun on a clean run.
My honest takeaway: pick based on where you play. Couch and steady hands? Tilt. Commute and chaos? Touch. And avoid any game that only offers one option — that's a studio that didn't think about how people actually hold their phones.
