Atmosphere beats graphics on a small screen

Atmosphere beats graphics on a small screen

We talk a lot about mobile graphics getting console-quality, and sure, some do. But playing Hollow Lantern reminded me that raw fidelity isn't what makes a game linger in your head. Mood does, and mood is cheap if you're clever.

Hollow Lantern is hand-drawn and largely static, and it's one of the most memorable things I've played this year. The trick is restraint — a single swaying lantern, the creak of floorboards, wind you can almost feel. Your imagination fills the rest, and imagination has infinite resolution.

This matters especially on phones, where the screen is tiny and you're often in a noisy place. A game that leans on atmosphere and sound cuts through distraction in a way that a busy, detailed game can't. Put headphones on and the whole world shrinks to your palm.

I'm not against pretty games. But the next time a trailer brags about its lighting, ask whether it actually makes you feel anything. The small studios that get this right punch far above their budget.
