Can real strategy games work on touchscreens?
For years I assumed serious strategy games couldn't survive the jump to phones. Too many menus, too much precision, fingers too fat for tiny units. Tideborn Empire didn't fully change my mind, but it got a lot closer than I expected.
The key was the interface. Pinch to zoom, drag to pan, big tappable buttons for the important actions. When a strategy game designs for the thumb instead of forcing a shrunken PC menu onto you, the depth survives. Tideborn's economy is genuinely deep and I never once fought the controls.
Where it stumbled was the tutorial, which dumped a decade of concepts on me in ten minutes. That's a common mobile-strategy sin — trying to prove the game is 'deep' before you've had any fun. The best ones teach through play.
So my updated take: yes, real strategy works on a phone, but only if the studio builds for the device from the start. Ports of complex desktop games almost always feel cramped. Native designs like this one show what's possible.
